Changing Adoption Misconceptions

Hope Cottage is excited to spotlight the oldest, and now fastest growing, youth education program to date: ABC’s of Adoption. The program began in 1998 and in 2013 it has really soared, increasing student participants by 29% from the 2010 school year.  Many middle school and high school teachers, particularly those within the Family and Consumer Science department, teach curriculum required in TEKS Chapter 130 that supports the diversity of modern family structures. The family created through adoption is often briefly touched upon because of lack of knowledge on the topic. This is where Hope Cottage’s ABC’s of Adoption presentation enhances classroom curriculum.

The ABC’s of Adoption is an interactive presentation that includes basic information about the history of adoption, current adoption processes and laws in Texas, who’s who in adoption, and positive adoption language. The program exists to not only help teachers cover family curriculum, but it allows misconceptions about adoption to be directly addressed. Hope Cottage does not use the presentation to promote adoption services.

In the past 3 years, more than 100 DFW area school teachers have partnered with Hope Cottage to provide this learning experience for 2,359 students. The ABC’s of Adoption is a free presentation and may be modified to fit classroom schedules and student populations. Presentations can be scheduled by emailing Christina Easton or calling 214-526-8721 ext. 203.

Recent feedback from teachers about ABC’s of Adoption:

“Super presentation. Speaker was sensitive to the fact that each student is a teen parent. Very informative and presented in a positive manner.” Karen Dobson, Rowlett High School

“The presentation is very helpful in teaching students the correct terminology relating to the adoption process.” -Leigh Ann Tamplen, Summit High School

“The ABC’s of Adoption is an important tool in education students in understanding the positive value of adoption, human life, the emotions involved in this type of crisis decision-making, and the adoption process.”   -Dianne Weaver, Hebron High School

“The students learned factual and valuable information about adoption.”    -Karen Stanton, Naaman Forest High School

How Much Do You Know About Teen Pregnancy?

Did you know that May is the National Month to Prevent Teen Pregnancy?

Each May, The National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy posts an online quiz for teens that helps them learn more about risky scenarios and how to make good decisions. This year, the quiz is more interactive than ever. Participants are allowed to create their own avatars which are then inserted into the quiz, offering a more personalized learning experience. Also for the first time during the National Day quiz, teens can simultaneously test their knowledge about pregnancy and relationships by answering the featured question after each scenario. We learn things like: most teens are not having sex and that pregnancy can occur even if it’s your first time having sex. Hundreds of thousands of teenagers participate in the National Day quiz each year. Take the quiz!

During the month of May, Hope Cottage will be presenting Teen Mentoring and Prevention (TMAP) to more than 500 DFW teenagers. The presentation teaches risk assessment and good decision making in order to prevent teen pregnancy. To schedule this free presentation for youth, email Christina Easton at call her  or at 214-526-8721 ext 203.

Food Truck Extravaganza Recap

The rain from Wednesday dissipated for a sunny and successful Food Truck Extravaganza on Thursday, April 11th. The aromas of savory meat and cheese greeted the 150 people that stopped by Hope Cottage’s parking lot to sample tasty food from the likes of Empanada Armada, Easy Slider, Ruthie’s Rolling Café, and Jack’s ChowHound. Camaraderie was shared by all as friends, neighbors, and co-workers took a break from the day to lunch with a purpose.

Guests learned how a portion of their lunch will assist children in foster care find permanent, adoptive homes through Hope Cottage’s Foster to Adopt Program as they conversed with Hope Cottage staff and stopped by the information table.

When the tables cleared and the parking lot emptied, the day’s energy remained. Hope Cottage has been nurturing and building strong families since 1918 in the Dallas community, and through events like the Food Truck Extravaganza, we are able to continue our presence and impact in the Dallas community.

Thank you to everyone who came out Thursday, April 11th to the Food Truck Extravaganza. We appreciate your support and hope to see you at future events!

The Link from Food Trucks to Foster to Adopt

This Thursday’s Food Truck Extravaganza’s impact extends beyond the allotted time to sample delicious bites from Easy Slider, Empanada Armada, Jack’s ChowHound, and Ruthie’s Rolling Café.  A portion of people’s purchases from these generous food trucks will directly help children in foster care find permanent, adoptive homes.

In the state of Texas there are over 10,500 children in foster care waiting to be adopted (AdoptUSKids). These are children that have been taken from their homes due to abuse or neglect and are in custody of the State of Texas. Child Protective Services works with agencies like Hope Cottage to connect foster care children with caring, adoptive families.

Hope Cottage’s Foster to Adopt families attend extensive training to prepare their hearts and homes to best serve the needs of children that have experienced a turbulent past. Once a child is placed in a home, Hope Cottage’s staff continually meets with the families to ensure a smooth and healthy transition for the child and the family.

The Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption is the leading advocate for foster care adoption. Hope Cottage would like to share one of their moving videos about adoptive parents meeting their child for the first time.

If you would like to learn more about Hope Cottage’s Foster to Adopt Program, please contact Lindsey.

To help decrease the 10,500 children in foster care waiting to be adopted, please attend Hope Cottage’s Food Truck Extravaganza this Thursday, April 11th from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm at Hope Cottage’s Parking Lot (4209 McKinney Avenue, Dallas, TX 75205). For any questions regarding this event, please email Kristina.

Pregnant and Confused?

There is no reason to feel alone. Hope Cottage works to nurture and build strong families alongside women considering making a parenting plan or an adoption plan. Our licensed social workers offer supportive guidance to women facing crisis pregnancies to explore all of their options, without any pressure to choose adoption.

If you or someone you know is experiencing a crisis pregnancy, below is a list of frequently asked questions that could provide clarity in this time of uncertainty.

Will I be pressured to place my baby for adoption?

Our role is to help you explore adoption as an option for your unplanned pregnancy. There is never any pressure or obligation to choose adoption. Our licensed, experienced counselors will help you explore adoption, and if you choose to parent, Hope Cottage can help you make a successful parenting plan that incorporates education on parenting skills, stages of development, and parenting classes beyond “basic infant care” to ensure your success as a parent.

What services does your agency provide to birth parents?

Hope Cottage offers birth families a supportive environment in which to receive counseling services as you examine adoption. All of the services birth families receive are free.

Can I choose the family for my child?

Yes. At Hope Cottage, we encourage birth parents to choose their child’s adoptive family. You’ll have the opportunity to see pictures and letters about families that are available for your child, and you can choose to meet families before making your final decision.

Do you have housing for pregnant women?

We don’t have housing on the premises, but may be able to provide minimal financial assistance with rent, utilities, food, clothing and transportation based on pregnancy-related needs.

If I place my child for adoption, will I be allowed to see my child?

We encourage birth parents to see their baby after delivery. Should you choose to place your child for adoption, you and the adoptive family may work together to determine the amount of contact you wish to have after you leave the hospital.

What does a parenting plan look like?

If you choose to parent, Hope Cottage counselors help prepare you for childbirth and caring for your infant up to his or her first birthday. Furthermore, we offer case management services to help you develop the skills required for successful parenting. Hope Cottage social workers help you navigate and access the community resources needed to assist you in your parenting plan. Most importantly, we provide the emotional support every woman needs when facing the challenges of becoming a parent.

To learn more, we invite you to explore our website or please call us anytime at 214.526.8721. For immediate consultation, counselors are available 24/7 at 214.404.4546.

Building Families through Embryo Adoption

I have been working in the field of adoption for many years, however, when I heard the term embryo adoption quite a few years ago, I was both intrigued and confused.  I had been privileged to see families built through infant, kinship, foster to adopt, and international adoption, so I was very curious about embryo adoption.

Embryo adoption, like other types of adoption, is an unselfish act of love.  Families placing embryos for adoption understand the emotional journey of infertility and are able to offer the hope of achieving pregnancy to other individuals and couples.

Many families, who have completed their family building efforts through in vitro fertilization, are faced with the difficult decision of what to do with their remaining embryos.  These families do not intend nor think they will have remaining embryos after fertility procedures, however, due to advancements in medical technology, they find themselves faced with this predicament.  On the other end of the spectrum are families who desire to achieve pregnancy.  For both families, embryo adoption is a positive and viable option.

Although I have made embryo adoption sound simple, there are emotional components and considerations (future blog topics) that are important for all families to understand.  At the end of the day though, embryo adoption creates families and lifelong ties, just like other types of adoption and I am privileged to play a part.

Today’s post was authored by Hope Cottage Adoption Counselor Julie Hames.

6 Tips for Parents to Stay Calm When Chaos Erupts

Ever feel like you are about to lose your cool when the kids are screaming, dinner is still sitting in the freezer, and the dog just dragged his muddy paws all over the clean, wooden floors?

Here are six easy tips for staying level-headed in the chaos of parenting:

  • Stop, take a deep breath, and pause before lashing out
  • Learn to laugh, perfection doesn’t exist
  • Remember – this too shall pass
  • Look beyond the child’s behavior for insight into possible explanations
  • Monitor your body’s stress or anger warning signs to curb your anxiety before exploding
  • Count to 10, sing a song, or reinforce positive thinking before overreacting

Hopefully these tips will help you stay calm the next time things don’t go according to plan.

Social Work Legacy

Did you know March is Social Work Month?  We asked the social workers at Hope Cottage to reflect on their passion for the social work profession.

Kathryn Sherwood, Pregnancy and Parenting Case Manager at Hope Cottage, eloquently summarizes the power of social work when she exclaimed:

“What I enjoy most about being a social worker is knowing that I have impacted someone’s life, even if it’s only in a small way and only for a moment. There are so many problems in the world and to some extent we’re all broken human beings just trying to find our way in the world.  I’m honored to be a small part that helps put some of the broken pieces back together.”

With this powerful statement, we invite you to learn more about social work through the eyes and experiences of our social workers.

Why did you become a social worker?

“Our time on earth isn’t supposed to be measured on how much we can get but how much we can give.”

“I’ve always felt like mercy and compassion are two of my greatest gifts. Social work allows me to work with all sorts of people, including children and adults, with the ultimate hope of making a positive impact in their lives.”

“The field of social work offers a range of opportunities for both the social worker and the people they serve. As a social worker I’ve been blessed to serve clients from infancy to retirement age.”

“I always knew I wanted to be involved in helping people improve their lives. During a part time job, I witnessed a group of three children being told they were going into foster care. This experience sticks out to me, because I remember seeing the scared looks on these siblings’ faces as they realized they weren’t going home with their parents that night. I’ve always want to be someone that people feel they can trust and turn to when they need help or just someone to listen.”

What skills are needed to be a good social worker?

“An open mind, resilience, and compassion”

“Great social workers have the heart of a teacher by equipping their clients with the tools to help themselves.”

“Part of being a good social worker is the ability to motivate your clients so they have the strength and courage to harness their individual self-determination. It also means being there for our clients in the moment of crises and empowering them with the skills and beliefs they need to continue their lives without you.”

“First, you must feel passionately about the work you do, whatever that work might be. Second, you have to set boundaries and maintain realistic expectations.”

“There has to be a line between your clients’ lives and your own life. I have realized that I can have an impact on someone’s life, but I can’t fix them.”

“One must be a good listener and learn to be quiet at the appropriate time.”

“Assessment, observation, flexibility, self-awareness, critical thinking, active listening, as well as verbal and written communication”

What do you enjoy most about being a social worker?

“The opportunity to help people meet their needs and goals in life is my favorite part of social work. It is not a duty, but a delight to serve others.”

“Having practiced in the social work field for over twenty years, the most rewarding aspect for me is knowing that I have provided my clients with a feeling of assurance.  No two situations are the same and every client’s journey is different, but my goal is always the same: to provide clients with support, education, and resources so that they can find a sense of peace in their hearts, an assurance that they are moving in the right direction.”

“I’ve learned that when someone tells you their story they are letting you into their world and that is a privilege. I always strive to encourage them, build up their self-esteem, and help them value their skills and abilities to feel like a competent individual able to change their own lives.”

“I love being able to see the successes in people’s lives.”

“While a social worker has to realize you can’t fix the entire world’s problems, if you can touch at least one person’s life- that is what counts.”

“Leaving people in a better place than you met them.”

“Watching people succeed in meeting their needs and sometimes even their dreams.”

Thank you social workers everywhere and special thanks to the Hope Cottage Social Work staff!

Hope Baby Adoption Story

As an adoption agency, we always enjoy hearing about the lives of our Hope Babies. Recently, we were fortunate enough to learn about one of our Hope Baby’s reuniting with his birth family. Roy Eaton, who was adopted from Hope Cottage in 1938, recounts his childhood and assembly with his newly found family members in the Wise County Messenger.
