Hope Cottage is excited to spotlight the oldest, and now fastest growing, youth education program to date: ABC’s of Adoption. The program began in 1998 and in 2013 it has really soared, increasing student participants by 29% from the 2010 school year. Many middle school and high school teachers, particularly those within the Family and Consumer Science department, teach curriculum required in TEKS Chapter 130 that supports the diversity of modern family structures. The family created through adoption is often briefly touched upon because of lack of knowledge on the topic. This is where Hope Cottage’s ABC’s of Adoption presentation enhances classroom curriculum.
The ABC’s of Adoption is an interactive presentation that includes basic information about the history of adoption, current adoption processes and laws in Texas, who’s who in adoption, and positive adoption language. The program exists to not only help teachers cover family curriculum, but it allows misconceptions about adoption to be directly addressed. Hope Cottage does not use the presentation to promote adoption services.
In the past 3 years, more than 100 DFW area school teachers have partnered with Hope Cottage to provide this learning experience for 2,359 students. The ABC’s of Adoption is a free presentation and may be modified to fit classroom schedules and student populations. Presentations can be scheduled by emailing Christina Easton or calling 214-526-8721 ext. 203.
