Hope Cottage

Expanding Your Family:
Adopting from India

India is a thriving, culture-rich nation-state situated along the Himalayan Mountain Range in southern Asia. It is the second most populous country in the world.

Hope Cottage is accredited by the Central Adoption Resource Agency (CARA) to deal with all matters concerning adoption in India. Hope Cottage partners with Indian adoption agencies authorized by the Indian government to arrange international and domestic adoptions in India.

The Children We Serve

Children available for adoption from India are currently cared for in orphanages and must be cleared for international adoption before families have access to medical and social information. Very little family and background information is available.

Who We're Looking For

Indian couples with one U.S. citizen and one Indian citizen (i.e., Indian passport holder) are given priority for international adoption of children under regulations signed February 14, 2006. Families and single women of Indian heritage who are U.S. citizens are needed to adopt children with medical needs and those older than 4 years. Children of school age are waiting for families with or without Indian heritage.

Adoptive parents must be between 30 and 55 years of age. Parents with a combined age of 90 years or less may adopt an infant or young child, and single persons up to 45 years of age may adopt. Couples must have been married for five years.

The Adoption Process

From the initial Hope Cottage application submission to arrival home with your child, the process can take from 2 to 2½ years, depending on your citizenship status and the circumstances of the child you wish to adopt.

One trip to India of 8-10 days is required when the guardianship or adoption is complete and the family receives their child. This includes the U.S. Embassy appointment for the child's visa to enter the United States.

Benefit from our Experience

We receive assistance and consultation for our India program from Dr. Bhanu Ivatury, a social worker from India who has lived in the United States for over 20 years. Her expertise and background are an invaluable asset to Hope Cottage's India program.
