Expanding Your Family:
Adopting from El Salvador

El Salvador is a beautiful country in the heart of Central America, bordered by Guatemala, Honduras and the Pacific Ocean. El Salvador has a culture rich in Indian and Spanish heritage. Salvadorans ethnically consist of mestizo, an Indian/Spanish and European mix, giving them dark hair and eyes with olive-colored skin.

The Children We Serve

The majority of children available range from as young as six months to three years; however, it is possible to place older children. Infants are usually placed in foster care arranged by our representatives, and older children placed in clean, well-maintained orphanages.

Who We're Looking For

We are currently accepting families who are interest in adopting children who are three years and older. At this time, couples and single women interested in adopting from El Salvador must be under the age of 45 years to adopt an infant or young child. All couples must be married at least five years.

The Adoption Process

Hope Cottage has submitted an application for accreditation to the national adoption authority in El Salvador. Although accreditation is not necessary for Hope Cottage to work in El Salvador, we believe it's to our advantage and yours that we become accredited.

From initial application to arrival home with a child, the process can take from 18 to 24 months. After assignment, it's possible for adoptive parents to visit their child in El Salvador, and both parents are required to make a short trip to El Salvador to be present at the adoption court hearing. A second trip of 10-14 days will be planned at the time of the visa interview at the U.S. Embassy when the child is ready to come home.

The actual length of the process will vary depending on adoptive parents' preferences for placement, but our staff will be able to give families regular updates on the progress.

Benefit from Our Experience

Our country specialist speaks English and Spanish and is in regular contact with our representatives in El Salvador. Together, they work toward assignment and legal finalization of all adoptions. Rest assured, supervision and support for your family will continue after you return home with your child. Hope Cottage sends post-placement reports and pictures to the Salvadoran adoption authority at six-month intervals for two years after you return home with your child.
